Macbeth

A few thoughts from the Artistic Director………………..

“I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent,
but only / Vaulting ambition, which o’erleaps itself / And falls on the other.”

Unfettered Ambition.
Greed that fuels an unprecedented rise to power.
The serpent that appears to be an innocent flower.

These terrifying concepts seared themselves into my inquisitive mind many years ago when I first encountered Shakespeare’s riveting “tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing….” I am speaking, of course, about the story of Macbeth.

Arriving at Opera a little later in life than most, I discovered there were operas by Giuseppe Verdi that rendered Shakespeare’s plays in glorious music. A tantalizing, irresistable combination for a musician like me, that loved the English bard.  And so, of course, after my initial forays into the more popular, well-known works of the Italian master, I eventually found myself standing in front of that iron door that is Giuseppe Verdi’s towering opera Macbeth. Towering for many reasons.  The vocal requirements are, without doubt, some of the most demanding. Attempting to devise a chamber version, a daunting endeavor at best. And, yet……….I found the possibility of pulling those iron doors open too insistently seductive to resist.

Come join us for Teatro Mistral’s production of Macbeth!
